Summer is just around the corner, and as we enjoy the warm weather and sunshine of spring, it's essential to start thinking about how to keep our furry friends safe and comfortable in the upcoming heat. As a professional dog and cat groomer, I've seen how the summer can affect our pets. Here are some helpful tips to ensure your dogs stay happy, healthy, and cool as the temperatures rise.

1. Hydration is Key

Just like us, dogs need plenty of water, especially when it's hot outside. Always have fresh water available for your dog, and consider bringing a portable water bottle and bowl on walks. Adding ice cubes to their water dish can also help keep it cool.

2. Avoid Overheating

Dogs can overheat quickly, so it's crucial to avoid strenuous exercise during peak heat hours (10 AM to 4 PM). Early morning or late evening walks are safer. Watch for signs of overheating, such as excessive panting, drooling, or lethargy, and never leave your dog in a parked car.

3. Paw Protection

Hot pavement can burn your dog's paws. Before heading out, check the pavement with your hand—if it's too hot for you, it's too hot for them. Walking on grass or shaded paths is a safer option. You can also look into dog booties for added protection.

4. Grooming for Comfort

Regular grooming helps keep your dog comfortable in the heat. For breeds with thick fur, consider a summer trim, but avoid shaving them completely, as their fur also protects against sunburn. Brushing your dog regularly helps remove loose fur and promotes better air circulation to their skin.

5. Sun Protection

Believe it or not, dogs can get sunburned, especially those with short or light-colored coats. Apply pet-safe sunscreen to exposed areas like the nose, ears, and belly. Providing shade in your yard or using a pet-safe sunshade can also help protect your pup.

6. Cool Treats

Treat your dog to some homemade frozen goodies. You can make simple frozen treats by blending peanut butter, yogurt, and bananas, then freezing the mixture in ice cube trays. These are not only delicious but also help your dog cool down.

7. Swimming Safely

Many dogs love to swim, and it's a great way to cool off. Always supervise your dog around water, whether it's a pool, lake, or beach. Rinse them off after a swim to remove chlorine or salt, and ensure they don't drink pool water, which can be harmful.

By following these tips, you'll help ensure your dog enjoys a safe and fun summer. If you have any concerns or need grooming services to keep your pet comfortable, feel free to contact us. Stay cool and happy summer!

Until next time!
